Last month I spent time creating a handful of new Last month I spent time creating a handful of new patterns all around the theme of picnicking by the seashore. It was part of Melanie Johnsson’s #thepatternchallengebymel. In case this is your first time hearing about it, it was a pattern challenge where you created a pattern based on a word prompt - like “Shells” for example. There was a new prompt every Monday and Thursday of each week during February, with a total of 9 prompts. I’m soooo freaking happy 😄 with what I created. I shared my progress here with you as I created a pattern for each prompt, so if you follow me you’ll recognize many of the patterns I'm sharing. But you’ll also notice that some of what I’m sharing with you today is a little different than what I originally shared for each prompt. There’s a simple reason for that - I didn’t plan ahead before the start of the challenge! I only prepped a colour palette before the challenge began, but didn’t stop to consider what patterns I would create and how they’d work together. 👉 The lesson: always brainstorm before jumping into anything creative, especially if it's a series or collection of artwork meant to work cohesively together! After a few prompts passed, I was clearly falling behind because I didn’t preplan anything 😰 (winging it really isn't my forte), I realized I really needed to spend a little time making some considerations. I ended up revamping 3 of my patterns to better complement the collection as a whole. My end goal was to create a collection I was proud of that would fit within my Licensing Portfolio. All-in-all, I would definitely participate in another one of these pattern challenges if the theme were to speak to me like this one did. Another year older, another one wiser! 🥳 This Another year older, another one wiser! 🥳 This past year has been quite the learning experience. Not only have I continued to pursue surface design but I've consistently added new art to my portfolio. I'm taking more chances on myself and my artwork. I've experimented with different subject matter and themes. I've learned I quite enjoy creating greeting cards! I pitch my work to new companies every month, and send newsletters out regularly! Along with all of that, I spent time bringing more balance into my life. Making sure to take breaks from both my day job and my art job because making sure that my mental health stays healthy is important to me. Plus not burning out is a nice bonus! lol I want to take a tiny moment to thank you for following me and for being a part of my life. You know what I've come to realize? I find it incr You know what I've come to realize? I find it incredibly difficult to design out of season! What the heck do I mean? Well in surface design as many of you know, you should be designing seasonally months beforehand. For example, you design for Christmas in the heat of Summer, Easter in December, etc... I'm the most inspired to create for a specific season or theme when we are in the middle of that time of year. Like I love to design for Summer when it's Summer. I find it hard to get my head in the zone when I should be designing for Fall when right now all I want to do is design for Spring. Do you design months before a season or holiday or are you like me? How do you get yourself in the zone to create for Halloween when it's Spring outside?
